Compiled by Scent Marketing Institute/SCENTtrends

  1. Feel safe, secure and nostalgic: Talcum powder
  2. Be more alert: Peppermint, citrus
  3. Relax: Lavender, vanilla, chamomile
  4. Perceive a room as smaller: Barbecue smoke
  5. Perceive a room as bigger: Apple, cucumber
  6. Buy expensive furniture: Leather, cedar
  7. Buy a home: Fresh baked goods
  8. Browse longer and spend more: Tailored floral/citrus scents
  9. Develop road rage: Unpleasant smells (rotting rubbish, air pollution
Note: Individual memory plays a role. If you have had a traumatic experience involving vanilla, you probably will not find that smell pleasant at all.

The above scent marketing trends should play a role in the design style for any given project. Kathi incorporates the sense of smell wherever needed in her design assignment whether in a home staging with the sweet aroma of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies or a retail establishment's citrus scent flowing throughout the store.  The scent plays a large role in the success of the design.
